Multi-platinum classic rockers Journey took the stage last night at Richmond Coliseum. Their act was preceded by another rock legend, Night Ranger, whose 1984 hit “Sister Christian” is still a regular on the airwaves. Night Ranger is still comprised of its original lineup Jack Blades, Kelly Keagy and Brad Gillis, as well as Joel Hoekstra and keyboardist Christian Matthew Cullen.
Speaking of original lineups: Journey still boasts having Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Deen Castronovo in the group. However, there is one blatant difference to the legendary group: a different lead vocalist. Original singer Steve Perry left the group in 1998 and was eventually replaced by their current frontman Arnel Pineda. Pineda was discovered via YouTube in 2007 and has been touring with the band since. Their first album with Pineda, Revelation, was released in June 2008 and debuted at #5 on the Billboard charts.
Pineda exudes the energy required for this legendary band, but brings to the group a voice and talent that is undeniably fresh and potentially stronger than Steve Perry’s. Although the band played some of their new material from the Revelation album, the classic songs of Journey such as “Faithfully,” “Open Arms,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “Don’t Stop Believing” were the most well-received by fans at the Coliseum.
