Holiday Parade at the Beach November 26th, 2006 Posted by Chris Malo

Virginia Beach, VA – The Holiday Parade at the Beach has become a Virginia Beach tradition! And this year it’s celebrating its 12th big anniversary! YOU could be a part of making the magic happen! The Parade Planning Committee is now accepting applications for the Holiday Parade at the Beach, to be held Saturday, December 2, at 5:30pm, along Atlantic Avenue. This year’s parade promises to be the biggest and best yet as we celebrate the holidays, “oceanfront-style!”

Parade entries must fall into one of three categories. “Bands/Performing Units” must be a uniformed group that plays or performs to holiday music. The group may be a school, business, military, civic, or other organizational unit. “Float Units” should depict a holiday theme and be towed or self-propelled. Costumed characters other than Santa Claus are permitted on floats. “Motorized Units” may include antique cars, military or rescue vehicles, and more. All vehicles must be decorated to fit the holiday theme.

Applications are available online at www.BeachStreetUSA.com, or by calling 757-425-3111. There is no entry fee. The deadline for submitting applications is November 13, 2006.

The submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the parade. The parade committee reviews all applications but accepts a limited number of entries with entertainment value due to the restricted length of the parade.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S FIRST-EVER LIVE ARENA EVENT, DELIRIUM,

TO APPEAR AT HAMPTON COLISEUM

NEXT TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21 and 22, 2006

Hampton, Virginia— November 13, 2006 --- As part of a limited 2006 North America tour, Delirium marks the first time in Cirque du Soleil’s history that lyrics have been created for the instrumental track and real words used instead of invented language, bringing the music a fresh poetic dimension. To heighten the musical experience, Delirium incorporates acrobatic dances as well as classic Cirque du Soleil feats including aerial, acrosport, and hand balancing acts. Tickets for the November 21st and November 22nd Delirium performance are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased online at www.livenation.com or at the Hampton Coliseum box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone at 671-8100 . Ticket prices are $101.50, $86.50, $71.50 and $41.50. The Hampton performances of Delirium are presented by Live Nation.

The large-scale production may be the most massive technical event ever created to tour arenas. With a 130 foot two-sided stage that bisects the arena, the audience is literally submerged in the huge set and 540 feet of projected visuals create an incredible interaction between the show and the spectators. Placing all this complex equipment in an arena is an intricate puzzle normally reserved for stadium performances. Delirium showcases 44 talented and multidisciplinary artists, including 11 musicians, 6 singers, 18 dancers, 8 acrobats, and 4 main characters. For the first time, Cirque du Soleil musicians and singers will be center-stage as their music will be the driving force of this colossal event.

RENEGADES ANNOUNCE “2-3-4 AND MORE NIGHT” November 17th, 2006 Posted by Chris Malo

The Richmond Renegades of the SPHL today announced a special promotion scheduled for Saturday, November 25th.

The promotion night, called “2-3-4 AND MORE NIGHT” will allow fans to purchase two tickets for bowl level seats for $22 with all taxes and charges included. In addition to the 2 seats the fans will receive 2 hot dogs, two Cokes, 2 bags of popcorn, two Fire-a-Tires, 2 Tropical Smoothie coupons, two G-Force Kart racing coupons, 2 Hooters $5 certificates and a two pack of Advil from Wyeth.

If there is a third fan in the group, that fan can purchase a seat and one of each of the above individual items will be included for an additional $11. If they wish a fourth seat, it’s $11 and that fan also received an individual one of the items. There is no limit on the number that can be purchased just a minimum of two. All tickets must be purchased at the same time.

Tickets go on sale Monday, November 20th and are available at the Coliseum box office or the Renegades box office located inside the Coliseum on E. Leigh Street. Tickets for this special are not available on the internet or at any TicketMaster location.

ARIES (Mar 21- Apr 19)

Drinking style: Impulsive Aries people like to party and sometimes don't know when to call it a night. Their competitive streak makes them prone to closing-time shot contests. They're sloppy, fun drunks, and they get mighty flirty after a couple tipples. Getting Aries people drunk is a good way to get what you want out of them, should other methods fail. Aries can become bellicose when blotto, but they will assume that whatever happened should be forgiven (if not forgotten) by sunrise. They can be counted on to do the same for you -- so long as you haven't gone and done anything really horrible to them last night, you sneaky Gemini.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

Drinking style: Taurus prefers to drink at a leisurely pace, aiming for a mellow glow rather than a full-on zonk. Since a truly intoxicated Taurus is a one-person stampede, the kind of bull-in a-china-shop inebriate who spills red wine on white carpets and tells fart jokes to employers, the preference for wining and dining(or Bud and buddies) to body shots and barfing is quite fortunate for the rest of us. This is not to say that the Bull is by any means a teetotaler -- god, no. A squiffy Taurus will get, er, gregarious(full of loudmouth soup, some would say) and is extremely amusing to drag to a karaoke bar when intoxicated.

GEMINI (May 21 - Jun 21)

Drinking style: Gemini's can drink without changing their behavior much-- they're so naturally chatty and short-attention-spanned that it's just hard to tell sometimes. They can amaze you by conversing with finesse and allusion, then doing something unbelievable in an extremely advanced state of intoxication, like puking in your shoe. Gemini's possess the magic ability to flirt successfully (and uninfuriatingly, which is very tricky) with several people at once. They like to order different cocktails every round -- repetition is boring -- and may create a theme (like yellow drinks: beer, sauvignon blanc and limoncello) for their own amusement.

CANCER (Jun 22 - Jul 22)

Drinking style: Cancer is a comfort drinker -- and an extra wine with dinner or an after-work beer or six can be extra comforting, can't it, Cancer darling? Like fellow water signs Scorpio and Pisces, Crabs must guard against lushery. Cancers are brilliant at ferreting out secret parties and insinuating themselves on VIP lists -- and, in true Hollywood style, Cancers are never really drunk; instead, they get "tired and emotional" (read: weepy when lubricated). But there's nothing better than swapping stories (and spit) over a few bottles of inky red wine with your favorite Cancer. Even your second-favorite Cancer will do. The sign also rules the flavor vanilla, and you'd be adored if you served up a vanilla vodka and soda.

LEO (Jul 23 - Aug 22)

Drinking style: Leo likes to drink and dance -- they're often fabulous dancers, and usually pretty good drinkers as well, losing their commanding dignity and turning kittenish. Of course, they're quite aware they're darling - Leos will be Leos, after all. They generally know their limit, probably because they loathe losing self-control. When they get over-refreshed, expect flirting to ensue -- and perhaps not with the one who brought them. But Leo's not the type to break rules even when drunk, so just try to ignore it (try harder, Cancer) and expect a sheepish (and hung over) Lion to make it up to you the next day.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22)

Drinking style: Cerebral Virgos are compelled to impose order onto their bender. Their famously fussy quest for purity could lead to drinking less than other signs, sure -- but it could also lead to drinking booze neat, to sucking down organic wine or just to brand loyalty. They rarely get fully shellacked -- but, oh, when they do! Virgo's controlled by the intellect, but there's an unbridled beast lurking within, and they let it loose when walloped. It's dead sexy (and surprisingly unsloppy). As one Virgo friend used to declare, "I'm going to drink myself into a low level of intelligence tonight." A toast to the subgenius IQ!

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)

Drinking style: "I'm a social drinker," slurs Libra, "it's just that I'm so damn social." Libra loves nothing more than to party, mingle and meet new people. Whether dipped in favor of Good Libra (with Insta-Friend device set to "on") or on the Wicked Libra side (they are very flirty when bored), the Scales can really work a room. Charming as they are, Libras are notoriously honesty when drunk, however, which can get them into all sorts of trouble -- including wearing their wobbly boots waaaay too early in the evening, flirting with their friend's beau or even blacking out the night's events entirely. Oops!

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)

Drinking style: Don't ever tell Scorpios they've had enough, for they'll smirk at you and quietly but intentionally keep tippling till they're hog-whimpering drunk, out of 100-proof spite. Scorpios like to drink, and screw you if you have a problem with that. Most of them see the sauce as something to savor in itself, and not as a personality-altering tool - though if depressed, self-loathing Scorps seek total obliteration. But generally, they're fascinating drinking pals, brilliant conversationalists and dizzying flirts. They also remember everything -- especially what you did when you were blitzed. Only drink with a Scorpio who likes you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

Drinking style: In vino veritas -- and, for Sagittarius, in booze blurtiness: When buttered, they'll spill all your secrets and many of their own. Tactlessness aside, Sagittarius is just plain fun to drink with. This is a sign of serious partying (what else would you expect from the sign of Sinatra, Keith Richards, the Bush twins and Anna Nicole Smith?). They're the people who chat up everyone in the room, then persuade the entire crowd to travel somewhere else -- like a nightclub, or a playground, or Cancun. Good-natured hi-jinks are sure to ensue (including a high possibility of loopy groping; spontaneous Sag is a brilliant booty call).

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)

Drinking style: Capricorn is usually described as practical, steadfast, money-hungry and status-thirsty -- no wonder they get left off the astrological cocktail-party list. But this is the sign of David Bowie and Annie Lennox, not to mention Elvis. Capricorn is the true rock star: independent, powerful and seriously charismatic, not too eager to please. And if they make money being themselves, who are you to quibble? But just like most rock stars, they're either totally on or totally off, and they generally need a little social lubricant to loosen up and enjoy the after party, especially if they can hook up with a cute groupie.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)

Drinking style: Aquarius and drinking don't go together that well (except for water, that is). They have an innate tendency toward know-it-allism, and if they get an idea while sizzled, they're more stubborn than a stain or a stone. If they're throwing a party or organizing an outing, however, they're too preoccupied with their duties to get combative and they make perfectly charming drunks in that case. Fortunately, they're usually capital drink-nursers. They also make the best designated drivers (if you can get them before they start raising their wrist) Aquarius is fascinated by drunk people and capable of holding interesting conversations with soused strangers while sober.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20)

Drinking style: If you're a Pisces, you've probably already heard that you share a sign and an addictive personality -- with Liz Taylor, Liza Minelli and Kurt Cobain. Not only do Pisces like to lose themselves in the dreamy, out-there feeling that only hooch can give, but they build up a mighty tolerance fast. Who needs an expensive date like that? On the other hand, they're fabulously enchanting partners, whether in conversation or in crime. With the right Pisces, you can start out sharing a pitcher of margaritas and wind up in bed together for days. The phrase "addictive personality" can be read two ways you know.

The next few weeks are my favorite time of year. Halloween is right around the corner, the weather is almost perfect - mostly mild with intermittent warm and cool days - and "Lost" is back on TV.

Yes, fall is my favorite season - at least until I am forced to start hording the daylight away for spring.

But as much as I love attaching a skeleton to my front door and passing off the cobwebs on my porch as intentional décor, the highlight of fall is the festivals. From Oktoberfest to the National Folk Festival, the next few weeks are filled with events celebrating almost everything. Technically, these are cultural festivals, but I affectionately refer to them as food festivals because that's why I'm there.

October is the only time when you can spend the whole month stuffing your face with barbeque, wine and Indian, Italian, German and Soul food and then pass it off as a culturally enriching event. Who says there's nothing to do in Richmond? There's a different event every weekend and with it a new and exotic dish to try.

So get hungry Richmond. The October food festivals are here.

Richmond's Original Italian Street Festival: Viva! Italia. This weekend's festival kicks off the month with a tour of all the music, dancing and wine Italy has to offer. Of course, what would Italy be without the food? Sample calzones, pasta, pizza, gelato and more, all made fresh by local Italian restaurants. Food, wine, music and dance - it sounds like a party to me. Free admission.

Saturday, Sept. 30, to Sunday, Oct.1

Gay Pride Virginia Festival: This Saturday in the capital city is the first-ever Gay Pride Virginia Festival. This celebration of diversity features live music, a fashion show, street performers and vendors. Plus, there will be face painting, balloons and magic for the kids and plenty of beverages for the adults. With so much family-fun, you can't actually expect anyone to cook. The doors will be open and specials will be served at area restaurants like Café Gutenberg, Sumo San and Havana '59. The festivities kick off Saturday morning with an interfaith brunch at the Berkeley Hotel. Free admission to the festival. Call (804) 355-8766 to reserve a seat at the brunch. Tickets are $20 per person.

Carytown Wine Festival: Carytown knows how to host a festival and Sunday's wine festival is no exception. Wineries like Horton Vineyards and Grayhaven Winery will offer samples and bottles of some of their most popular wines. Cary Court shopping center will be home to the official tasting, but all of Carytown is participating in the fun. There will be live music, plenty of great food and the streets will be closed to allow for lots of roaming. Tickets are on sale at Plan 9, Carytown Wine and Beer, Can Can, Babe's, River City Cellars and Lex's. $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

2nd Street Festival: When the "Harlem of the South" throws a party you can bet it's going to be an explosion of music, dance and food. For the past 18 years, Jackson Ward has shut down its streets to celebrate the rich African American heritage of the city and next weekend's festival promises to be fantastic. I wonder if George Allen will be there to mug for the cameras. There will be plenty of live music, soul food and traditional street fare. Sample jerk chicken, smoked turkey legs, funnel cake, hot dogs and more at this quintessential Richmond street festival. Free admission.

Friday, Oct. 6, to Sunday, Oct. 8

High on the Hog: Church Hill's favorite barbeque feast / festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and you can't miss it. For one day, Libby Hill Park turns into Richmond's coolest concert venue complete with rockabilly bands, plenty of frothy beverages and enough pork to feed a nation. It's fun for the whole family - unless, of course, your family includes pigs. Free admission.

National Folk Festival: Let's face it: Richmond got a lot cooler once we started hosting the National Folk Festival. This is the country's "oldest traditional arts festival" and we've got it through 2007. The Folk Festival celebrates music, dance, culture and food from a variety of American cultures. It's like 100 festivals rolled into one. Italian sausage, hot dogs, crab cakes, jerk chicken, wraps and shrimp are just a few of the American dishes that will be available. Plenty of global fare will be available, too, like Thai, Greek, Caribbean, German, Indian and West African cuisine. Throw in some tasty desserts and beverages and you've got the granddaddy of food festivals. Free admission.

Friday, Oct. 13 to Sunday, Oct. 15

Friday 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday noon to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday noon to 7 p.m.

Richmond's Riverfront

Oktoberfest: German culture is about a lot more than beer, lederhosen and the polka. They have pretzels, too. Actually, from bratwurst and knackwurst to potato pancakes and pastries, Germany is home to plenty of culinary treats. Bring the kids, sample the food, do the chicken dance and enjoy German culture at its best. Mugs and souvenirs will be on sale, along with lots of silly hats. Festival of India: Get out your sari and put on your bindi because it's time for the Festival of India. This is my favorite food festival of all. Sample samosas, naan (a delcious flat bread), flavored lassi (like a milkshake, but different) and plenty of curry and vindaloo. There will also be traditional dance performances, music and vendors (I picked up some fabulous bracelets last year). Best of all, if you don't have time to stay for the culture, you can just go booth to booth and grab some food to go. Free admission.

Saturday, Oct. 28 to Sunday, Oct. 29

Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 8 p.m.

Brunswick Stew Festival: Technically this festival is in November, but it's so close to the cut off that I had to include it. This stew competition pits some of the best stewmasters in the country against each other striving to win the title of best Brunswick stew. And the audience gets to try all of the great stew for only $1 a sample. It's a great way to fill up and try something new. Live music and events for the kids will take place throughout the day. Free admission.
